[ ♪♪♪ ]>>OH, MY GOD.>>Anita: STARTLING NEW VIDEO OUT OF THE BAHAMAS SHOWING THE RELENTLESS POWER OF HURRICANE DORIAN. THE STORM CONTINUES TO BLAST THE ISLAND NATION AND IS BEING BLAMED FOR FIVE DEATHS IN THAT COUNTRY SO FAR. THE RED CROSS ESTIMATES 13,000 HOMES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED OR ARE SEVERELY DAMAGED. THERE ARE REPORTS OF MANY PEOPLE STRANDED ON ROOFS AND IN ATTICS. POLICE ARE URGING PEOPLE TO STAY CALM AND WARNING RESCUE CREWS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COME FOR THEM UNTIL WEATHER CONDITIONS IMPROVE.>>>AFTER BATTERING THE BAHAMAS, THE WIND AND RAIN FROM HURRICANE DORIAN STARTING TO ARRIVE IN FLORIDA. THE GOVERNOR THERE ORDERED THE EVACUATION OF 9 COUNTIES. CBC DAVID COMMON IS IN FLORIDA WITH THE LATEST ON PREPARATIONS.>>Reporter: IT’S GOING TO GET A LOT WORSE THAN THIS. THE INITIAL WAVES OF RAIN AND WIND FROM HURRICANE DORIAN NOW COMING IN OFF THE ATLANTIC ACROSS MUCH OF THE SOUTHERN FLORIDA COAST. IT’S GOING TO GET A LOT WORSE OVERNIGHT AS THESE WINDS GET MUCH STRONGER, CAPABLE OF KNOCKING DOWN POWERLINES, TREES, CAUSING CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS AND THEN THE STORM SURGE. ALL OF THOSE WAVES COMING IN, RISING UP AND GETTING PERHAPS INTO STRUCTURES, TO BUILDINGS, TO OFFICES, THAT HAVE GOT SANDBAGS AROUND THEM ALREADY. PLYWOOD UP. THAT EXTENDS QUITE A BIT FURTHER INLAND BECAUSE THE HURRICANE WARNINGS AND WATCHES DO GO MUCH FURTHER INLAND AS THE WINDS CONTINUE. BIG PROBLEM WITH THE HURRICANE IS HOW SLOW IT IS MOVING. IT IS CREEPING FORWARD EVEN AS IT CHURNS A DESTRUCTIVE PATH AND SO IT STAYS OVER TOP OF AN AREA FOR A LONG TIME INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF DESTRUCTION IT CAN REACH. WE HAVE SEEN THAT SCHOOLS WILL BE CLOSED THROUGH AT LEAST WEDNESDAY AT THIS POINT. HOSPITALS IN THIS AREA, MANY OF THEM HAVE BEEN EVACUATED. MANY PEOPLE INCLUDING IN THIS AREA OF BARRIER ISLAND HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY SHOULD LEAVE THEIR HOMES FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY. BRIDGES ARE WILLING CLOSED. THE LOCKDOWN IS BEGINNING. FLORIDANS HAVE GET THROUGH THIS STORM AND THEN THE CLEAN UP. WE KNOW THERE ARE 16,000 POWER WORKERS JUST IN THIS STATE ALONE THAT HAVE BEEN BROUGHT IN ON STANDBY STAGING AND WILLING TO RESTORE THE POWER AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE WE KNOW AT THIS POINT IT WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY GO DOWN ON MASS, THOUSANDS OF HOMES AND BUSINESSES TO BE AFFECTED. AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS? WELL, ACCORDING TO THE PROJECTIONS, THE STORM CONTINUES MOVING NORTH TOWARDS GEORGIA, THE CAROLINAS, VIRGINIA. THAT’S TAKING UP SEVERAL MORE DAYS DOWN THE ROAD. DAVID COMMON, CBC NEWS, PALM BEACH FLORIDA.>>Anita: AND WE’VE BEEN WATCHING THIS STORM CLOSELY. WHAT’S THE LATEST FOR US?>>IT REALLY IS MOSTLY JUST SHOCKING FOR ME TO SEE HOW STATIONARY THIS STORM IS. WHEN WE THINK OF HURRICANES, WE EXPECT THEM TO BE QUICKLY AND MOVING ON TO IMPACT ANOTHER AREA. THE PORT OF BAHAMAS IN THE NORTHWESTERN PORTION SPECIFICALLY, THAT’S THE PART THAT’S THE SCARIEST TO ME. I WANT TO SHOW YOU WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE ON SATELLITE IMAGERY TO GIVE YOU A PICTURE OF HOW LARGE IT IS. IT IS CATEGORY FIVE STORM. THE WIND GUSTS SUSTAINED VERY CLOSE TO 300 KILOMETRES PER HOUR. AND NOW IT IS ACTUALLY BACK DOWN TO 230 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WHICH IS STILL INSANE WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT HOW FAST THAT MUST BE. YOU CAN SEE THE CENTRE OF THE EYE, THOUGH. THIS IS OVER THE PAST 6 HOURS. NOTICE HOW IT IS ESSENTIALLY JUST STAYING ALMOST ENTIRELY IN THE SAME SPOT. THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE RIGHT AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THAT EYE. SO THAT MEANS THE ISLAND RIGHT NOW HAS BEEN AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE FEELING THE BRUNT END OF THIS STORM OVER THE NEXT 12-24 HOURS. IT IS RARE TO SEE THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTRE ACTUALLY JUST SAY THAT THE STORM IN ITSELF IS STATIONARY. NORMALLY THERE IS SOME MOVEMENT. AS I MENTIONED ABOUT 220 KILOMETRES PER HOUR IS THE WIND SPEED OF THIS STILL A CATEGORY FOUR STORM. WHERE IS THIS GOING TO GO? IT WILL MAINTAIN ITS STRENGTH AND IT WILL BE VERY SLOWLY EDGING TO THE NORTH AND TO THE WEST. AS YOU CAN SEE IT’S NOT FORECAST TO MAKE LANDFALL ON THE COAST OF FLORIDA OR CAROLINAS OR GEORGIA. IT WILL BE LOSING STRENGTH AND INTENSITY AS IT GOES NORTH AND LARGELY BECAUSE THE WATER HERE IS NO LONGER CONDUCIVE TO THE STORM. AND EVEN INTO THE VERY FAR FUTURE IF WE LOOK AT THE END OF THE WEEK THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE BRINGING HEAVY RAIN TO THE MARITIMES BY SATURDAY. SO SOMETHING WE ARE GOING TO BE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON. RIGHT NOW OUTSIDE IT IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY HERE IN THE LOWER MAINLAND. TEMPERATURES VERY COMFORTABLE, VERY SUMMERLIKE STILL EVEN THOUGH TOMORROW IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT, FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, SEPTEMBER IS HERE, THE TEMPERATURES THROUGHOUT THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD ARE GOING TO BE VERY CLOSE TO WHERE THEY SHOULD BE. ABOUT 15° OR SO. I PUT TOGETHER A QUICK BACK TO SCHOOL FORECAST IF YOU ARE HEADING BACK TO WORK. TEMPERATURES FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, MAYBE A FEW CLOUDS. WE HAVE 16°. AS THE DAY GOES ON, EXPECT A LOT OF THAT SUN TO BE SHINING VERY SIMILAR TO TODAY. DAYTIME HIGHS AROUND 23 AND THEN AS THE KIDS ARE UP AS LATE AS 10 O’CLOCK, YOU’LL GET TEMPERATURES AROUND 18 AND ONLY A FEW CLOUDS THERE. IN TERMS OF THE REST OF THE REGION, IT IS GOING TO BE PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT WARMER AS WE HEAD FARTHER EAST. IF YOU’RE OUT IN THE VALLEY TOWARDS ABBOTSFORD, EXPECT THE TEMPERATURES TO BE IN THE MID TO HIGH 20S. IN TERMS OF RAINFALL, THE ONLY THING I WANT TO MENTION IS THAT TOMORROW AFTERNOON ALONG THE NORTH SHORE MOUNTAINS AND POTENTIALLY THE SEA-TO-SKY COULD SEE A FEW STRIKES OF LIGHTNING. THERE ISN’T A LOT TO TAKE US THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK. IN TERMS OF OUR FIVE-DAY FORECAST, WHAT DOES THE WEEK HAVE IN STORE? VERY NICE COUPLE OF DAYS. THURSDAY, THOUGH, STILL SUNSHINE AND TEMPERATURES COMFORTABLE INTO THE LOW TO MID-20S. IT’S NOT REALLY GOING TO BE UNTIL THE WEEKEND WHERE WE START TO GO BACK TOWARDS SEASONAL AND EVEN POTENTIALLY SOME RAIN FOR SUNDAY.>>Anita: THANK YOU. [ ♪♪♪ ]>>Anita: DOZENS OF PEOPLE ARE FEARED DEAD AFTER A DIVE BOAT CAUGHT FIRE OFF THE COAST OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EARLY THIS MORNING. THE U.S. COAST GUARD HAS RECOVERED AT LEAST 8 BODIES SO FAR, BUT 30 PASSENGERS REMAIN UNACCOUNTED FOR.>>Reporter: THE FLAMES ALONE ARE HARROWING ENOUGH. NOW CONSIDERED THE MORE THAN 30 PASSENGERS ASLEEP BELOW DECK. >>RIGHT NOW THEY’RE CONDUCTING SHORELINE SEARCHES FOR ANY AVAILABLE SURVIVORS.>>Reporter: BUT HOPE IS DWINDLING. ONLY FIVE CREW MEMBERS ARE KNOWN TO HAVE ESCAPED. >>THE CREW WAS ACTUALLY ALREADY AWAKE AND ON THE BRIDGE AND THEY JUMPED OFF. >>Reporter: THEY’RE NOW BEING TREATED FOR INJURIES.>>VERY SURREAL AT THE MOMENT. WHEN I CAME OVER HERE, I TRIED TO GET A HOLD OF THEM AND THE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED. I IMAGINE THERE’S A LOT OF PEOPLE RUNNING AROUND TRYING TO GET SOME INFORMATION. >>Reporter: THE BOAT CALLED CONCEPTION WAS A SCUBA DIVING VESSEL DOCKED OFF SANTA CRUZ ISLAND NEAR THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COAST. HE SAILED ON THE CONCEPTION FOR 12 YEARS HE SAYS. >>IT’S A TOP NOTCH OUTFIT. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS HAPPENED TO THEM. IT’S JUST HORRIBLE TO THINK PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN TRAPPED DOWN IN THAT BUNK ROOM.>>THERE’S NO WORD YET ON WHAT STARTED THE BLAZE. COAST GUARD OFFICIALS SAY THE BOAT WAS IN FULL COMPLIANCE AND HAD NO PRIOR VIOLATIONS. ELLEN MARROW, CBC NEWS WASHINGTON. >>Anita: IT IS BACK TO SCHOOL IN HONG KONG, BUT THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS AREN’T ACTUALLY HEADING BACK TO CLASS. INSTEAD THEY’RE GOING INTO THE STREETS TO CONTINUE ANTI-GOVERNMENT PROTESTS DESPITE AN INTENSIFYING POLICE CRACKDOWN. AT A UNIVERSITY RALLY EARLIER TODAY. >>Reporter: THE SCHOOL YEAR WAS SUPPOSED TO START TODAY AND YET HERE THEY ARE. THE STUDENTS OF HONG KONG BACK OUT CHANTING ON THE STREETS. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, COLLEGE STUDENTS, THOUSANDS OF THEM ARE ON STRIKE ALL ACROSS THE CITY. THEY HAVE BEEN JOINED IN SOME CASES BY THE DOCTORS AND NURSES. IF YOU HAVE A LOOK AT THIS CROWD, SOME OF THE PROTESTERS HERE ARE CLEARLY READY FOR MORE THAN JUST SITTING AND LISTENING TO SPEECHES AND CHANTING. NOT EVEN A SWIRLING TYPHOON MANAGED TO DISCOURAGE THE PEOPLE FROM GOING ON THE STREETS. NOT EVEN THE VIOLENCE OF THIS WEEKEND AND WHILE WE’RE ABOVE GROUND HERE, BELOW GROUND THERE’S A FAIR AMOUNT OF CHAOS AS WELL. PROTESTERS HAVE BEEN SWARMING THE TRANSIT STATIONS HERE. SOME OF THE PROTESTERS BLOCKING THE DOORWAYS TO SUBWAY TRAINS. THE POLICE CHASING THEM. THE ARRESTS CONTINUE TODAY AND WATCHING ALL OF THIS, OF COURSE, THE HONG KONG AUTHORITIES WHO ARE FRUSTRATED AND FURIOUS. THE NUMBER 2 IN HONG KONG SUGGESTING AGAIN THAT THEY’RE NOT RULE OUTING EMERGENCY LAWS BEING PUT IN PLACE. THEY BELIEVE LAW AND ORDER MUST BE RESTORED IMMEDIATELY. THE BIG CONCERN IS WHAT WILL BEIJING DO? CHINESE STATE RELEASED A STATEMENT EARLIER WITHIN THE LAST 24 HOURS SUGGESTING QUITE CLEARLY THAT, QUOTE, THE END IS NEAR FOR THESE PROTESTERS. THAT THERE IS A RED LINE THAT CHINA SAYS MUST NOT BE CROSSED AND THAT INCLUDES A CHALLENGE TO CHINA’S SOVEREIGNTY. NOT ONLY IS BEIJING FURIOUS AT A GATHERING LIKE THIS, IT IS ANGRY OF THE IMAGES THAT HAVE COME OUT THIS WEEKEND, PARTICULARLY THE TEARING DOWN AND BURNING OF A CHINESE FLAG. THAT SORT OF STUFF IS NOT GOING TO BE TOLERATED. IT’S THE MESSAGE IT WANTS TO PASS. AND OCTOBER FIRST, THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE PEOPLES REPUBLICAN OF CHINA, THE LAST THING CHINA WANTS IS IMAGES OF THIS SORT OF UNREST FLOATING THROUGHOUT THE WORLD LEADING UP TO THAT DATE. CBC NEWS HONG KONG.>>Anita: A SENIOR BRITISH GOVERNMENT INSIDER SAYS PRIME MINISTER BORIS JOHNSON WILL MOVE TO CALL AN ELECTION NEXT MONTH IF MPS THWART HIS BREXIT PLAN. >>I DON’T WANT AN ELECTION. YOU DON’T WANT AN ELECTION. LET’S GET ON WITH THE PEOPLES AGENDA.>>Anita: AS JOHNSON SPOKE, PROTESTERS NEARBY CHANTED STOP THE COUP. THAT FOLLOWED AN EMERGENCY CABINET MEETING TO REPORTEDLY CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITY OF A SNAP ELECTION. THE OPPOSITION IS EXPECTED TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TOMORROW PREVENTING A NO DEAL BREXIT. CONSERVATIVE MPS HAVE BEEN WARNED IF THEY SUPPORT IT, THEY WILL BE KICKED OUT OF THE PARTY.>>>IT’S VANCOUVER’S MOST FAMOUS BIRD. HE’S MISSING. AFTER THE BREAK, FEARS SOMEONE MAY HAVE TAKEN CANUCK THE CROW. [ ♪♪♪ ]>>Anita: EAST VANCOUVER’S MOST WELL-KNOWN BIRD IS MISSING. CANUCK THE CROW BECAME FAMOUS FOR STEALING A KNIFE FROM A CRIME SCENE, BUT HE HASN’T BEEN SEEN SINCE FRIDAY. HE DESCRIBES HIMSELF THE BIRD’S BEST FRIEND, HE SAYS IT IS NOT LIKE CANUCK TO DISAPPEAR. >>I’M HAVING A HARD TIME JUST BELIEVING THAT HE’S JUST OUT THERE BEING A CROW. HE TENDS TO STICK TO THE AREA AND SO I’M PRETTY WORRIED ABOUT HIM RIGHT NOW. >>Anita: HE FEARS SOMEONE MAY HAVE TAKEN THE BIRD. HE CAN DISTINGUISH HIM FROM OTHER CROWS BECAUSE OF THE DISTINCTIVE ORANGE BAND ON HIS LEG. LAST YEAR HE RECEIVED MORE THAN 300,000 VOTES TO WIN THE CBC ONLINE POLL TO BECOME METRO VANCOUVER’S OFFICIAL AMBASSADOR. OFFICIALLY THEY FIND CANUCK THE CROW. THANKS FOR JOINING US TONIGHT.
